From art fairs to openings, framing to fakes; this talk will give an introduction to contemporary Australian art, how and when to buy it, what to look for, and tips and tricks to make good collecting decisions. The talk will cover the role of commercial galleries, how they differ from Museums and how they shape the cultural landscape of Australia. Other topics will include contemporary photography (and why it is a great place to start collecting!), How galleries select which artists to represent, What sort of budget you need to start collecting, Are openings worth going to?, and a whole range of questions for anyone looking for an introduction to the art world.

 

The Speaker

Toby grew up in country NSW and went on to study Art History at Syndey Uni and Curating at COFA. Toby is a specialist in contemporary Australian art and Director of Michael Reid Sydney, one of the country’s leading commercial art galleries. Toby was director of Michael Ried Berlin from 2015 – 2017.
